- It will be located in Mejillones, one of the country's most established green hydrogen and green ammonia developments. It will contribute to local and international decarbonization.
- It considers a US$2.5 billion investment and installing a modern plant that will produce approximately 580,000 tons/year of green ammonia. A first stage in 2027 will produce close to 290,000 tons/year. It also contemplates the construction of a solar park.
- As part of its community involvement policy, MAE started, a few months ago, an early and permanent relationship program with the community.
March 23, 2023- MAE, a company engaged in producing green hydrogen and green ammonia, announced the progress of its Volta Project, which will be located in the municipal district of Mejillones, region of Antofagasta. It is a pioneering project and one of the most advanced projects in Chile, which aims to contribute to global decarbonization and position Chile as a relevant player in this process.
This project's development started more than two years ago. After finishing the pre-feasibility stage, it is moving forward to the next stage of development, which includes requesting construction permits.
The company contemplates a US$2.5 billion investment in constructing a modern plant that can produce nearly 580,000 tons/year of green ammonia. At the first stage, close to 290,000 tons/year will be produced, and the first deliveries are estimated to be in 2027.
The project also includes the construction of a solar park to provide clean energy for the plant. The solar park's total installed capacity is estimated at at least 600MW.
It is projected that the plant, at total capacity, will contribute to reducing more than 1 million tons/year of CO2 emissions. "With this project, we seek to support the local and global decarbonization process to address the current climate emergency affecting the planet, from which we are not exempt as a country. Likewise, we want to foster the role of Chile in the green hydrogen and green ammonia industry, taking advantage of the country's competitive advantages, as well as the great solar irradiation of the Atacama desert, " says Gonzalo Moyano, CEO of MAE.
The company is working in a sustainable and efficient water supply system. "We want to be a player that contributes to the district of Mejillones with tangible actions, being involved with the territory and its communities with initiatives that contribute to the local socio-economic development under the sustainability principle in all its processes," added Moyano.
For MAE, early and permanent relations with the community are of the utmost importance. To that end, a few months ago, the company started several actions to generate information and communication with the community. As part of such activities, MAE has met with different territory community and neighborhood organizations as well as municipal and regional authorities.
The company estimates it will enter the project this year into the Environmental Impact Assessment System through an Environmental Impact Study.
